Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1941, Catholic Charities provides food, shelter, and comprehensive services to its local community.4 Through funding from foundations, grants, organizations, and individual donors, Catholic Charities operates 16 programs providing support to more than 4,500 people daily.4 Headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, Catholic Charities employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Catholic Charities announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on June 22, 2024, Catholic Charities detected suspicious activity in its network environment.1 As a result, Catholic Charities launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Catholic Charities confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and taken by an unauthorized third party during the breach on June 22, 2024. As a result, Catholic Charities began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On January 27, 2025, Catholic Charities completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Immigration identification number
  • Financial account number
  • Health information

 

As a result of the breach, Catholic Charities posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on February 7, 2025, Catholic Charities began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Catholic Charities is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
