Communicare Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Inlet Health, which does business as Communicare, regarding its recent data breach. The Communicare data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 3,700 individuals.

ABOUT INLET HEALTH D/B/A COMMUNICARE:

Communicare is a mental healthcare provider based in Kentucky. Founded in 1967, Communicare provides an array of behavioral health services to children and adults, including case management, school-based therapy, early intervention programs, prevention services and alcohol and drug abuse treatment, medication management, crisis stabilization, residential placements, emergency services, and more.2 Headquartered in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Communicare has multiple locations across Kentucky and employs over 500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Communicare announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on November 23, 2024, Communicare became aware of unusual activity on certain systems.1 As a result, Communicare launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Communicare confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and taken by an unauthorized third party during the breach on November 23, 2024. As a result, Communicare began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • State issued identification number
  • Passport number
  • Military identification number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the breach, Communicare posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, Communicare plans to send breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Communicare is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
