Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Bankers Cooperative Group, Inc. (“BCG”) regarding its recent data breach. The BCG data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 14,000 individuals.

BCG is an insurance broker based in New Jersey. Founded in 1982, BCG is a provider of employee benefit programs and a liability risk broker for New Jersey’s banking industry.3 Additionally, BCG is the self-contained brokerage facility for members and associate members of NJBankers.3 As administrator of the NJBankers sponsored Employee Benefits Trust, BCG can leverage thousands of industry employees and their dependents to negotiate group employee benefit programs and pricing not generally attainable on an individual employer basis.4 Headquartered in Cranford, New Jersey, BCG employs over five individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, BCG announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on August 13, 2024, BCG discovered suspicious activity associated with one employee email account.1 As a result, BCG launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, BCG confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party during the breach to its email environment. As a result, BCG began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While BCG has not disclosed the specific type of information impacted, the breach notice stated that personal information and protected health information may have been contained within the breached account.1 Additionally, on January 14, 2025, BCG filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights, whose reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information.
BCG did, however, include a list of the entities whose employees were being notified of the breach. That list is as follows:

As a result of the data breach, BCG posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, BCG has begun sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
