Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Newport Harbor Pathology Medical Group, Inc., which does business as Orange County Medical Group Pathology, Mission Laguna Pathology Medical Group, and Barr Dermatology (collectively, “NHPMG) regarding its recent data breach. Recently, the former Laguna Pathology Medical Group and Mission Laguna Pathology Medical Group merged to form Newport Harbor Pathology Medical Group.3 As a result, NHPMG’s expanded group of 30 pathologists provides a greater depth of resources for its patients and clients.3 Today, NHPMG specializes in breast pathology, dermatopathology, hematopathology, molecular pathology, cytopathology, genitourinary pathology, and gastrointestinal pathology.3 NHPMG has two locations in Irvine and Mission Viejo, California.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, NHPMG announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on November 11, 2024, NHPMG became aware of unauthorized activity within a portion of its environment.1 As a result, NHPMG launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, NHPMG confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between October 8, 2024, and November 11, 2024. As a result, NHPMG began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. This review is ongoing as of January 24, 2025. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Unique or other government issued identification numbers
- Medical information (e.g., diagnosis, pathology test results, medical record number)
- Health insurance information
As a result of the data breach, NHPMG posted a notice of the incident on its website.
