Relay is a national, accredited, nonprofit institution of higher education for teachers based in New York. Founded in 2011, Relay offers degree programs, professional development, and unique learning experiences for teachers, principals, college students, and members of the public.2 Today, Relay partners and collaborates with multiple peer institutions of higher education, educational nonprofits, public school districts, and public charter networks, and currently serves 4,000 teachers and 1,200 school leaders across the United States.2 Headquartered in New York, New York, Relay has additional locations across 11 states and employs over 200 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Relay reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on November 22, 2024, Relay discovered that a threat actor gained access to several Relay applications hosted by Amazon Web Services (“AWS”) and deleted certain files stored on the AWS environment.1 As a result, Relay launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Relay confirmed that certain student records containing personally identifiable information in its systems may have been compromised by the threat actor during the breach. As a result, Relay began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Phone number
- Email address
On January 10, 2025, Relay began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices provided to Vermont residents, Relay is providing affected individuals with a list of the information impacted and complimentary identity monitoring services.
