Kafene is a point-of-sale financing partner based in New York. By enabling its retail partners to offer flexible lease-to-own (LTO) purchase options for prime and nonprime consumers, Kafene helps merchants expand their customer base, and meet a growing demand for furniture, appliances, electronics, tires, and other durable goods.2 Founded in 2019, Kafene’s platform utilizes more than 20,000 data inputs in tandem with AI and machine learning technologies to create a better financing experience for both merchants and customers.2 Headquartered in New York, New York, Kafene has an additional office in Delaware and employs over 100 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On January 14, 2025, Kafene reported to the Attorney General of Texas that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party. As of January 14, 2025, details of the breach have not been made publicly available by Kafene. While not much is known about the breach, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Government issued identification number (e.g., passport, state ID card)
