WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, it was reported by multiple online sources and news outlets that PowerSchool had experienced a data breach that impacted the privacy of its clients’ data, including sensitive personal information belonging to students. According to these sources, PowerSchool recently released a statement confirming the breach saying, “…on December 28, 2024, PowerSchool become aware of a potential cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain information through one of our community-focused customer support portals, PowerSource. Over the succeeding days, our investigation determined that an unauthorized party gained access to certain PowerSchool Student Information System (“SIS”) customer data using a compromised credential, and we regret to inform you that your data was accessed.”1 Additionally, PowerSchool disclosed that, “…the stolen data primarily contains contact details such as names and addresses. However, for some districts, it could also include Social Security numbers (SSNs), personally identifiable information (PII), medical information, and grades.”2 As of January 9, 2025, PowerSchool has not publicly disclosed the specific nature of the cybersecurity incident or confirmed whether the incident resulted in a data breach.
