Dignity Health Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1986, Dignity Health operates more than 40 hospitals and 400 care centers, including urgent and occupational care, imaging centers, home health, and primary care clinics.3 Today, some of Dignity Health’s specialties include cardiology, emergency care, neurology, orthopedics, oncology, women’s health, and more.4 Headquartered in San Francisco, California, Dignity Health employs over 10,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Dignity Health announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on September 20, 2024, Dignity Health learned there was an active cyber event on its IT network involving an unknown individual.1 Dignity Health’s IT network was temporarily disabled and rendered inaccessible before it was able to restore it the next day.1 As a result, Dignity Health launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Dignity Health confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between September 17 and September 20, 2024. As a result, Dignity Health began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Driver’s license number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, Dignity Health posted a notice of the incident on its website. Based on the website breach notice, Dignity Health is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
