Dobie Road Data Breach Investigation

Dobie Road is a 230+ bed nursing facility based in Michigan. Founded in 1844, Dobie Road provides a variety of services to patients, such as outpatient physical, cognitive, and occupational therapy, long term care, memory care, short term physical, speech, and aquatic therapy and rehabilitation.2 Today, Dobie Road features a 120 acre campus including gardens, a wellness trail, a greenhouse, several enclosed courtyards, an indoor atrium, and a warm water therapy pool.3 Headquartered in Okemos, Michigan, Dobie Road employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Dobie Road announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on or about July 20, 2024, Dobie Road learned of a data security incident involving its third-party electronic health records portal manager.1 On or around September 19, 2024, Dobie Road received updated information from the third party stating that the personal information of current and/or past patients/residents of Dobie Road may have been impacted.1 As a result, Dobie Road launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Dobie Road confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party. As a result, Dobie Road began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Protected health information

 

As a result of the data breach, Dobie Road posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on December 27, 2024, Dobie Road began mailing individual breach notification letters affected individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Dobie Road is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
