Modern Auto is an automotive retailer and car dealership based in North Carolina. Founded in 1933, Modern Auto offers new and used vehicles from a variety of brands, including Nissan, Toyota, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Hyundai, Infiniti, Mazda, Subaru, Gensis, and Ford.2 Additionally, Modern Auto provides automotive service, collision repair, and rental services at various of its locations in North Carolina. Headquartered in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Modern Auto has 16 additional locations across North Carolina and employs over 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Modern Auto reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, Modern Auto recently discovered that it had experienced a cybersecurity incident. As a result, Modern Auto launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Modern Auto confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party between July 7 and July 8, 2024. As a result, Modern Auto began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- Financial account information
- Credit/debit card numbers
- Medical record
In December 2024, Modern Auto began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices provided to the Massachusetts residents, Modern Auto is providing affected individuals with a list of the information impacted and complimentary identity monitoring services.
