Covaris Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Covaris, LLC (“Covaris”) regarding its recent data breach. The Covaris data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an unknown number of individuals.

ABOUT COVARIS, LLC:

Covaris is a biotechnology manufacturer based in Massachusetts. Founded in 1999, Covaris manufactures advanced sample preparation tools based on its proprietary and patented AFA™ technology.3,4 Using AFA enables Covaris to conduct a vast array of non-contact, isothermal processes to be developed for use in a broad range of applications in genomics, proteomics, cell Biology and drug discovery, and formulation.4 In 2014, Covaris expanded through establishing Covaris Ltd in Europe to more directly serve customers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.3 Headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Covaris posted notice of a data breach on its website in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed or acquired. According to the breach notice, Covaris discovered unexpected activity in its systems in February 2024. As a result, Covaris launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Covaris confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised when an unauthorized actor first accessed its computer system on February 26, 2024.1 As such, Covaris began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Date of birth
  • Financial account information
  • Health information
  • Username and password

 

On December 23, 2024, Covaris began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the form breach notice, Covaris is providing affected individuals with a list of the information impacted and 24 months of complimentary identity monitoring services.
