Kitsap Mental Health Services Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Kitsap Mental Health Services (“KMHS”) regarding its recent data breach. The KMHS data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT KITSAP MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES:

KMHS is a nonprofit behavioral healthcare organization based in Washington. Founded in 1978, KMHS provides a full range of inpatient, outpatient, and residential behavioral health services for children, adults and families.2 Today, KMHS serves over 5,600 clients each year and employs more than 600 individuals.2 Headquartered in Bremerton, Washington, KMHS has four additional locations in Washington.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, KMHS announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on October 17, 2024, KMHS detected suspicious activity within its business network. As a result, KMHS launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, KMHS confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party on September 17, 2024, and between October 8 and October 19, 2024. As a result, KMHS began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Driver’s license or state identification number
  • Financial information
  • Medical information (e.g., diagnosis, condition, treatment information, medications, claims information)

 

Recently, KMHS posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, KMHS plans to mail individual breach notification letters affected individuals. Based on the website breach notice, KMHS is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
