Jefferson Dental Center Data Breach Investigation

Today, Jefferson Dental Center provides a variety of general dentistry services to individuals and families, including hygiene, restorative, crown and bridge as well as oral surgery and removable dentures and partials.2 The private practice of Dr. Lorraine Celis, Jefferson Dental Center has one location located in South Bend, Indiana.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Jefferson Dental Center announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on November 15, 2024, Jefferson Dental Center discovered that its computer network systems were not working.1 As a result, Jefferson Dental Center launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Jefferson Dental Center discovered that it had experienced a ransomware attack and sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between November 14 and November 15, 2024. As a result, Jefferson Dental Center began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Clinical and treatment information
  • Insurance or claim information

 

On November 26, 2024, Jefferson Dental Center posted initial notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on December 3, 2024, Jefferson Dental Center began mailing individual breach notification letters affected individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Jefferson Dental Center is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
