CASTO is a privately held real estate services firm based in Ohio. Founded in 1926, CASTO offers a full range of commercial real estate services, including asset management, commercial acquisitions and dispositions, commercial development, leasing, maintenance, and property management, and financial services.2 Additionally, CASTO provides a variety of residential real estate services such as residential development and property management, buying and selling homes, and tenet coordination.2 Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, CASTO has four additional locations in Ohio, Florida, and North Carolina, and employs over 200 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, CASTO reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on December 9, 2023, CASTO became aware of suspicious activity within its computer network. As a result, CASTO launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, CASTO discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between December 8 and December 9, 2023. As a result, CASTO began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On August 22, 2024, CASTRO completed this review. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by CASTO. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license or other government identification number
- Account number, credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
On November 27, 2024, CASTO began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, CASTO is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
