Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating AuthoraCare Collective (“AuthoraCare”) regarding its recent data breach. The AuthoraCare data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 58,000 individuals.

AuthoraCare is a nonprofit healthcare organization and hospice provider based in North Carolina. Founded in 1980, AuthoraCare offers an array of hospice and long-term care products and services, including pain and symptom management, medicine related to life-limiting illness, medical equipment and supplies, on-call nursing assistance 24/7, spiritual care, and hospice aide and homemaker services.2 Additionally, AuthoraCare provides advanced illness care to individuals in homes, independent living areas of retirement communities, and skilled nursing and assisted living facilities.3 Headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, AuthoraCare has an additional location in Burlington, North Carolina and employs over 200 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, AuthoraCare posted notice on its website of a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed or acquired. According to the breach notice, on August 22, 2024, AuthoraCare became aware of technical issues related to its network systems.1 As a result, AuthoraCare launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, AuthoraCare confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed or obtained by an unauthorized third party between August 18 and August 22, 2024. As a result, AuthoraCare began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On October 21, 2024, AuthoraCare completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Medical diagnosis
- Prescription information
- Demographic information
Recently, AuthoraCare began notifying impacted individuals. On November 19, 2024, AuthoraCare filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights. Additionally, on January 2, 2025, AuthoraCare posted notice of the breach on its website. Based on the website breach notice, AuthoraCare is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
