The Ability Experience is a nonprofit organization based in North Carolina. Founded by the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity in 1977, The Ability Experience has numerous programs designed to educate undergraduates, alumni, and communities about the abilities of people with disabilities as well as providing opportunities for volunteerism and service.3 Today, The Ability Experience is heavily involved in the construction of accessible environments nationwide for people with disabilities, and its 180+ chapters fundraise more than $750,000 annually to support the Ability Experience’s programs.3,4 Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, The Ability Experience employs over 10 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, The Ability Experience announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on or around February 3, 2024, The Ability Experience experienced unauthorized access to its network.1 As a result, The Ability Experience launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, on November 21, 2024, The Ability Experience discovered that sensitive personal information belonging to participants or supporters of an Ability Experience program or team event, such as Journey of Hope, Gear Up Florida, Ability Camp/PUSH camps or an AccessABILITY Project, may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party.1 As a result, The Ability Experience began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number or state identification number
- Email login and password
- Financial account and/or banking information
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
As a result of the data breach, The Ability Experience posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on December 2, 2024, The Ability Experience began mailing individual breach notification letters affected individuals. Based on the website breach notice, The Ability Experience is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
