Chemonics International Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Chemonics announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on December 15, 2023, Chemonics became aware of suspicious activity related to certain user accounts.1 As a result, Chemonics launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Chemonics discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between May 30, 2023, and January 9, 2024. As a result, Chemonics began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On October 31, 2024, Chemonics completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Gender/sexual orientation information
  • Email address
  • Driver’s license number or state identification number
  • Passport information
  • US military ID information
  • Tribal ID information
  • Financial information
  • Health and related information
  • Usernames and passwords
  • Biometric information
  • Signatures

 

As a result of the data breach, Chemonics posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on December 3, 2024, Chemonics began mailing individual breach notification letters affected individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Chemonics is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
