American Gypsum Data Breach Investigation

American Gypsum is a building materials manufacturer based in Texas. Founded in 1985, American Gypsum specializes in the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of gypsum wallboard and drywall.2 Today, American Gypsum is the fifth largest producer of gypsum wallboard in North America, operating five gypsum plants with six production lines with an annual capacity of nearly four billion square feet.3,4 Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, American Gypsum employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, American Gypsum reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, in late May 2024, American Gypsum experienced a security incident in which an unauthorized third party gained access to its systems.1 As a result, American Gypsum launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, American Gypsum confirmed that sensitive personal information belonging to current and former employees in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party on May 24, 2024. As a result, American Gypsum began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical records information

 

On November 22, 2024, American Gypsum began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, American Gypsum is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
