WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on or around September 13, 2024, Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology was alerted to unusual activity in its information technology network.1 As a result, Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology discovered that sensitive personal information belonging to its patients may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party. As a result, Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Medical record numbers
  • Patient account numbers
  • Health insurance identification numbers
  • Diagnoses and/or treatment information
  • Address

 

Recently, Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology posted a data breach notice on its website. Additionally, on November 13, 2024, Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology reported the breach to the United States Department of Health and Human Services and began mailing notices to affected individuals.
