Founded in 1986, CIC provides applicant selection products and predictive data derived directly from the courts to the property management, insurance, and banking industries.2 Today, CIC champions over 36 million housing court records and 1 billion FCRA compliant criminal records, complete with its heuristic matching methodology and regulatory filtering tool.3 Headquartered in Duluth, Georgia, CIC employs over 50 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, CIC reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that its third-party vendor, BackChecked, LLC, had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, BackChecked provided and hosted an online platform for CIC to enable its clients to access employment screening reports for their job applicants.1 Recently, BackChecked became aware of unusual activity within its computer network. As a result, BackChecked launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, BackChecked discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party on September 26, 2024. BackChecked reviewed the data and concluded that a subset of employment applicant information acquired for CIC clients was compromised. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
On November 22, 2024, CIC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, CIC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
