WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Central Carolina Insurance Agency reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on March 20, 2024, Central Carolina Insurance Agency became aware of suspicious activity within its network. As a result, Central Carolina Insurance Agency launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Central Carolina Insurance Agency confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party between December 31, 2023, and March 20, 2024. As a result, Central Carolina Insurance Agency began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On November 13, 2024, Central Carolina Insurance Agency completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Passport number
  • License plate/vehicle identification number
  • Financial account number
  • Credit card number
  • Medical information (e.g., patient ID number, medical records)
  • Birth certificate
  • Green card
  • Digitized or electronic signature
  • Hull ID number
  • Employee username and password

 

On November 21, 2024, Central Carolina Insurance Agency began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Central Carolina Insurance Agency is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
