WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Option Care Health reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on August 1, 2024, Option Care Health became aware of an issue involving an employee’s email inbox.1 As a result, Option Care Health launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Option Care Health confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party on July 31, 2024. As a result, Option Care Health began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. During this review, Option Care Health determined that protected health information belonging to certain patients had been impacted.1 Besides this, the exact type of information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Option Care Health. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “medical information” and “health insurance information” can include the following types of information:

  • Any individually identifiable information, in electronic or physical form, regarding the individual’s medical history or medical treatment or diagnosis by a health care professional
  • An individual’s insurance policy number or subscriber identification number, any unique identifier used by a health insurer to identify the individual, or any information in an individual’s application and claims history, including any appeals records

As a result of the data breach, Option Care Health began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice mailed to California residents, Option Care Health is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
