WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, ASM Global reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on October 12, 2023, ASM Global became aware of unauthorized activity on certain of its legacy systems.1 As a result, ASM Global launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, ASM Global confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third-party between October 10 and October 12, 2023. As a result, ASM Global began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by ASM Global. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number, California ID card number, tax identification number, passport number, military ID number, or other unique ID number issued on a government document
- Account number or credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
- Unique biometric data generated from measurements or technical analysis of human body characteristics, such as a fingerprint, retina, or iris image, used to authenticate a specific individual
- Genetic data
On November 12, 2024, ASM Global began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice mailed to California residents, ASM Global is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring.
