Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Rockford Gastroenterology Associates, Ltd. (“RGA”) regarding its recent data breach. The RGA data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an unknown number of individuals.

RGA is a specialized medical practice in Rockford, Illinois. Founded in 1980, RGA was one of the first office based diagnostic endoscopy labs in the United States.2 All of RGA’s physicians are on the faculty of the University of Illinois College of Medicine – Rockford, are active staff members at UW Health Swedish American Hospital and OSF Saint Anthony Hospital, and participate in various community and professional organizations.2 RGA helps patients with a variety of conditions, including acid reflux, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, diverticulosis/diverticulitis, IBS, and pancreatitis.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, RGA reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, RGA found that their network environment was affected by a cybersecurity incident.1 As a result, RGA launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, RGA confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party on or around December 16, 2023. As a result, RGA began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The investigation was completed on or around September 4, 2024, and RGA confirmed that patient personal information and personal health information was affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by RGA.
On September 18th, 2024, RGA posted notice of the data breach on its website. Additionally, RGA plans to notify affected individuals by mail. Based on the website notice, RGA is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
