MMI Services is an independent well-servicing contractor based in California. Since its establishment in 1972, MMI Services has provided service in a wide variety of completions, workovers, abandonments and production work for large oil companies, small independent producers and the State of California.2 Some of these services include coil tubing, vac truck and crane, BOP and Hydro-Testing, wireline, transportation, and light tower services.3 Headquartered in Bakersfield, California, MMI Services employs over 200 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, MMI Services reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on May 21, 2024, MMI Services experienced a network disruption that impacted some of its systems.1 As a result, MMI Services launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, MMI Servies confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third-party between May 20 and May 21, 2024. As a result, MMI Services began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by MMI Services. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number, California ID card number, tax identification number, passport number, military ID number, or other unique ID number issued on a government document
- Account number or credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
- Unique biometric data generated from measurements or technical analysis of human body characteristics, such as a fingerprint, retina, or iris image, used to authenticate a specific individual
- Genetic data
On October 23, 2024, MMI Servies began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice mailed to California residents, MMI Services is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring.
