Autobell is a privately held and family operated car wash company based in North Carolina. Founded in 1969, Autobell offers a variety of interior and exterior car cleaning services, including exterior cleaning, robotic wheel cleaning, interior vacuuming of carpets and seats, wiping of rubber mats, dash, door panel, and console, interior window cleaning, and hand drying.3 Today, Autobell washes nearly five million cars annually.4 Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Autobell has over 80 locations across Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, and employs over 3,000 individuals.4
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Autobell reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on April 7, 2024, Autobell became aware of a data security incident within its computer network. As a result, Autobell launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, on September 24, 2024, Autobell discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between April 1 and April 7, 2024. As a result, Autobell began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Driver’s license number
- Passport number
- Tax identification number
- Financial information
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
On October 22, 2024, Autobell began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Autobell is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
