Eastern Shipbuilding Group Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (“ESG”) regarding its recent data breach. The ESG data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to over 2,900 individuals.

ESG is a shipbuilder based in Florida. Founded in 1976, ESG builds vessels for national defense and commercial clients, including the U.S. Coast Guard’s Heritage Class Offshore Patrol Cutters and the U.S. Army Corps’ new MCHD.2 With a portfolio of over 350 vessels and Defense Contract Management Agency and Defense Contract Audit Agency certified systems, ESG is one of the largest private sector employers in Florida.2 Headquartered in Panama City, Florida, ESG has three shipyards in Florida and employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, ESG reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on February 4, 2024, ESG became aware of suspicious activity with its network. As a result, ESG launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, ESG discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party on February 1, 2024. As a result, ESG began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On April 25, 2024, ESG completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number

 

On June 28, 2024, ESG began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, ESG is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
