Founded in 1919, Easterseals provides a range of services to children with developmental delays, disabilities, and other special needs.3 Today, Easterseals’ programs and services include therapy, autism support and services, clinics, aquatic programs, a learning academy, and specialty programs.4 Headquartered in Peoria, Illinois, Easterseals employs over 50 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Easterseals reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on April 1, 2024, Easterseals experienced a network disruption that impacted the functionality and access of certain systems.1 Upon becoming aware of the issue, Easterseals launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Easterseals learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized individual during the network disruption. As a result, Easterseals began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On October 7, 2024, Easterseals concluded this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Passport
- Medical information
On October 14, 2024, Easterseals began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Easterseals is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
