WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Boston Children’s Health Physicians announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on September 6, 2024, Boston Children’s Health Physicians was informed that its IT vendor had identified unusual activity within its systems.1 Then, on September 10, 2024, Boston Children’s Health Physicians detected unauthorized activity on limited parts of its network.1 As a result, Boston Children’s Health Physicians launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Boston Children’s Health Physicians learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized individual on September 10, 2024. As a result, Boston Children’s Health Physicians began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. During this review, Boston Children’s Health Physicians determined that the impacted data belonged to current and former employees, patients, and guarantors.1 While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Medical information (e.g., medical record numbers, treatment information)
- Health insurance information
- Billing information
As a result of the data breach, Boston Children’s Health Physicians posted notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on October 4, 2024, Boston Children’s Health Physicians and its IT vendor mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
