Bon Secours Mercy Health Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Bon Secours Mercy Health reported to the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to its employees may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, Bon Secours Mercy Health recently detected suspicious activity related to its Workday test environment, which houses the data of current and former Bon Secours Mercy Health and Roper St. Francis healthcare employees.1 As a result, Bon Secours Mercy Health launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

On August 21, 2024, Bon Secours Mercy Health learned that sensitive personal information in the Workday environment may have been compromised by an unauthorized individual between April 10, 2024, and July 31, 2024. As a result, Bon Secours Mercy Health began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Demographic information

 

As a result of the data breach, Bon Secours Mercy Health began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices sent to South Carolina residents, Bon Secours Mercy Health is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
