According to the breach notice, on August 9, 2024, H&R Block determined that an unauthorized third party appeared to have used personally identifiable information obtained from sources other than H&R Block to obtain access to information associated with certain clients’ accounts or MyBlock accounts.1 As a result, H&R Block launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, H&R Block confirmed that sensitive personal information belonging to clients and their families may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between August 5 and August 7, 2024. As a result, H&R Block began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Tax return information
  • MyBlock account information
