Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Access Group, which does business as AccessLex Institute (“AccessLex”), regarding the recent data breach of its vendor, Financial Business and Consumer Solutions, Inc.’s (“FBCS). The AccessLex data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

Founded in 1983, as a graduate and professional student loan servicer, AccessLex has evolved into a legal education nonprofit organization that supports students at every stage of their legal education.2 Today, AccessLex offers a variety of services to law students, including on-campus and online financial education programming and resources, a comprehensive bar prep program, scholarships, and more.3 Headquartered in West Chester, Pennsylvania, AccessLex employs over 50 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, AccessLex reported to the Attorney General of California that its vendor, FBCS, had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to AccessLex in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on February 26, 2024, FBCS discovered unauthorized activity within certain systems in its network. As a result, FBCS launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, FBCS learned that sensitive personal information belonging to AccessLex in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized individual on February 26, 2024. As a result, FBCS began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On or around July 16, 2024, AccessLex was notified of the data breach. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Phone number
- Financial account number
As a result of the data breach, AccessLex began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, AccessLex is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
