Janos is a manufacturing company based in New Hampshire. Today, Janos designs, engineers, and manufactures infrared optical lens assemblies, thermal imaging lens assembles, lens elements, coating, and metal mirrors.3 Since its founding in 1970, Janos has been providing solutions for industrial thermography, defense, security, analytical instruments, and thermography.3 Headquartered in Keene, New Hampshire, Janos employs over 50 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Janos reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, in October and November 2023, Janos detected unusual activity within its network environment stemming from cybersecurity incidents involving two separate unauthorized third parties.1 Upon becoming aware of the issue, Janos launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Janos learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized individual between January 25, 2023, and November 6, 2023. As a result, Janos began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 3, 2024, Janos concluded this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license of state issued identification number
- Passport number
- Birth certificate number
- Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number)
- Health insurance information
On October 3, 2024, Janos began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Vermont residents, Janos is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
