Qualitrol Data Breach Investigation

Qualitrol is a monitoring technology manufacturing company based in New York. Founded in 1945, Qualitrol develops products and solutions in the core development areas of asset protection for substation equipment, overhead lines, and rotating machines, as well as in advanced technologies such as partial discharge, gas chromatography, fiber optics, and power quality technology.3 In addition to its products and software, Qualitrol provides a broad range of service offerings, including technical support and advanced services.3 In 2016, Qualitrol was acquired by Fortive Corporation, a global a global technology company based in Washington.4 Headquartered in Fairport, New York, Qualitrol employs over 500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Qualitrol reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, in October and November 2023, Qualitrol detected unusual activity within its network environment stemming from cybersecurity incidents involving two separate unauthorized third parties.1 Upon becoming aware of the issue, Qualitrol launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Qualitrol learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized individual between January 25, 2023, and November 6, 2023. As a result, Qualitrol began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 3, 2024, Qualitrol concluded this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or state-issued identification card number
  • Passport number
  • Birth certificate number
  • Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number)
  • Health insurance information

 

On October 3, 2024, Qualitrol began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Vermont residents, Qualitrol is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
