Griffon Corporation Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Griffon Corporation (“Griffon”), regarding its recent data breach. Griffon is a diversified management and holding company that conducts business through wholly owned subsidiaries.2 Founded in 1959, Griffon oversees the operations of its subsidiaries, allocates resources among them and manages their capital structures.2 Today, Griffon conducts its operations through two reportable segments: Home & Building Products and Defense Electronics.2 The Home & Building Products segment consists of three companies, The AMES Companies, Inc., ClosetMaid LLC, and Clopay Building Products Company, Inc.2 The Defense Electronics segment consists of Telephonics Corporation, a provider of intelligence, surveillance and communications solutions for defense, aerospace and commercial customers.2 Headquartered in New York, New York, Griffon employs over 5,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Griffon reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, Griffon recently learned of an instruction to certain of its systems by an unauthorized third party. As a result, Griffon launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Griffon confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized individual between June 15, 2024, and July 21, 2024. As a result, Griffon began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. During this review, Griffon determined that the information accessed belonged to current or former personnel of Griffon or one of its current or former subsidiaries or affiliates.1 While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license and/or other government identification number
  • Passport number
  • Account number
  • Health insurance number

 

On September 30, 2024, Griffon began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Vermont residents, Griffon is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
