Mattson Technology Data Breach Investigation

Mattson is a supplier in the semiconductor equipment industry in California. Founded in 1988, Mattson designs, manufactures, markets and globally supports semiconductor wafer processing equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits.2 In addition to its product portfolio, Mattson has also grown an extensive portfolio of intellectual property including key technologies under worldwide patents.2 With locations in the United States, Mattson also has design centers in Germany, manufacturing facilities in Germany and China, and sales and support teams in China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan.2 Reincorporated in Delaware in 1997, Matton is headquartered in Fremont, California, and employs over 500 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Mattson reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on April 30, 2023, Mattson became aware of suspicious activity on its computer network. As a result, Mattson launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Mattson learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized actor between April 11 and April 29, 2023. As a result, Mattson began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Mattson. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number, California ID card number, tax identification number, passport number, military ID number, or other unique ID number issued on a government document
  • Account number or credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information
  • Unique biometric data generated from measurements or technical analysis of human body characteristics, such as a fingerprint, retina, or iris image, used to authenticate a specific individual
  • Genetic data

 

As a result of the data breach, Mattson began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, Mattson is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
