Maryville Academy Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Maryville Academy (“Maryville”) regarding its recent data breach. The Maryville data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

Maryville is a childcare organization based in Illinois. Established as St. Mary’s Training School in 1883, Maryville now offers residential care, mental health services, healthcare and family support services, as well as a variety of educational and youth development offerings.2 The mission of Maryville is to help children and families reach their fullest potential by empowering intellectual, spiritual, moral and emotional growth.3 Across its eight locations between Bartlett, Berwyn, Chicago, Des Plaines, and Niles, Maryville serves over 4,000 annually.2,3 Headquartered in Des Plaines, Illinois, Maryville employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Maryville announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice posted on its website, on July 15, 2024, Maryville became aware of unusual activity within its IT systems. As a result, Maryville launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Maryville learned that sensitive personal information or protected health information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third-party. As a result, Maryville began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. As of the September 13, 2024, notice Maryville is in the process of reviewing the files to notify impacted individuals. The type of information stored on Maryville systems, and therefore the information potentially exposed, includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Passport numbers
  • Other government IDs
  • Medical information (e.g., treatment, diagnosis, and medical history)

 

As a result of the data breach, Maryville posted notice of the incident on its website. Based on the website breach notice, the Maryville investigation is ongoing, and it plans to send breach notices to affected individuals.
