WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Heard, McElroy & Vestal reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on or around February 21, 2024, Heard, McElroy & Vestal identified a suspicious email rule in an employee’s email account.1 As a result, Heard, McElroy & Vestal launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Heard, McElroy & Vestal learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized individual during the incident. As a result, Heard, McElroy & Vestal began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On August 29, 2024, Heard, McElroy & Vestal completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number

 

On September 20, 2024, Heard, McElroy & Vestal began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Vermont residents, Heard, McElroy & Vestal is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
