MED Tax Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT MED TAX, INC.:

MED Tax is a local, family-owned accounting firm based in Delaware. In business for over 35 years, MED Tax offers a variety of services to individuals, including tax return preparation, tax planning and compliance, estate tax preparation, trust tax preparation, processing prior year tax returns, amending tax returns, and more.2 Additionally, MED Tax provides services to businesses such as bookkeeping, payroll processing, monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll returns, QuickBooks consulting and bookkeeping services, and entity formation and organization.2 MED Tax is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, MED Tax reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on June 18, 2024, MED Tax identified suspicious activity within its computer environment. As a result, MED Tax launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, MED Tax learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized individual during the incident on June 18, 2024. As a result, MED Tax began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 30, 2024, MED Tax completed this review. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by MED Tax. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state identification card number
  • Account number, credit card number or debit card number, if circumstances exist wherein such a number could be used without additional identifying information, access codes or passwords
  • Account passwords or personal identification numbers or other access codes

 

On September 20, 2024, MED Tax began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, MED Tax is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
