JWU is a private, nonprofit university located in Providence, Rhode Island. Founded in 1914, JWU offers over 100 undergraduate, graduate, online, continuing education, and accelerated programs in healthcare, business, culinary arts, hospitality, technology, education and more.3 Competing in Division III of the NCAA as the Wildcats, JWU features 15 varsity sports and 27 varsity athletic teams universitywide.4 With an additional campus in Charlotte, North Carolina, JWU has a total enrollment of more than 8,000 students from over 65 countries, and employs over 1,000 individuals.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, JWU reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on July 11, 2024, JWU identified suspicious activity within its computer network. As a result, JWU launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, JWU determined that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor during the incident on July 11, 2024. As a result, JWU began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 6, 2024, JWU completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Financial account information
On September 19, 2024, JWU began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, JWU is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
