The Maids Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1979, The Maids offers a variety of cleaning services, including deep cleaning, one time cleaning, spring or fall cleaning, same day cleaning, move out cleaning, recurring cleaning, small business cleaning, holiday cleaning, apartment cleaning, move-in cleaning, window and carpet cleaning services, and more. Today, The Maids is a leader among the many home cleaning companies in the industry, with nearly 200 franchises serving over 90 major U.S. and Canadian cities.2 Headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, The Maids has additional offices across more than 40 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.2

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, The Maids reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on January 22, 2024, The Maids detected unusual activity on its computer network and discovered that it was the victim of a cybersecurity incident.1 As a result, The Maids launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, The Maids learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized individual on January 22, 2024. As a result, The Maids began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On May 24, 2024, The Maids concluded this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Passport number
  • Financial account information
  • Private health insurance information

 

On August 22, 2024, The Maids began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, The Maids is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
