Altman Plants Data Breach Investigation

Altman Plants is a family-owned horticultural grower based in California. Founded in 1975, Altman Plants provides a wide selection of plant varieties within each of its product categories—including succulents and cacti, annuals, perennials, tropicals, and houseplants.3 Today, Altman Plants is one of the largest nurseries in the country and the largest succulent grower in the world, offering over 1,025 unique varieties of cacti and succulents.4 Headquartered in Vista, California, Altman Plants has locations across the United States and employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Altman Plants reported on its website that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the posted breach notice, on or about September 11, 2023, Altman Plants became aware of suspicious activity affecting certain systems within its network. As a result, Altman Plants launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Altman Plants learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized individual on or about September 11, 2023. As a result, Altman Plants began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 2, 2024, Altman Plants concluded this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Passport number
  • Financial account information
  • Payment card information
  • Username and password
  • Employer identification number
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

On September 13, 2024, Altman Plants began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice posted on its website, Altman Plants is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
