Stillwater Mining Company Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Stillwater Mining Company, the Montana operations of Sibanye-Stillwater (“Stillwater”) regarding its recent data breach. The Stillwater data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an unknown number of individuals.

ABOUT STILLWATER MINING COMPANY:

Stillwater is a combination of mining operations in Montana. Acquired by South African-based mining company Sibanye-Stillwater in 2017, Stillwater consists of the Stillwater Mine, East Boulder Mine, and the Metallurgical Complex, where it extracts and processes platinum group metals (PGM) from the J-M Reef.2, 3 The only known significant source of PGMs in the Unites States, the mines have been operating for over 35 years and produce mainly palladium and platinum.3 Headquartered in Columbus, Montana, Stillwater employes over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Stillwater reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on or about July 8, 2024, Stillwater discovered that communications technology systems within its global network had been compromised.1 As a result, Stillwater launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, in August 2024, Stillwater learned that sensitive personal information in its U.S. systems may have been compromised. As a result, Stillwater began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
• Name
• Social Security number
• Date of birth
• Contact details
• Government ID and/or passport number
• Financial information
• Medical information

On September 9, 2024, Stillwater began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, Stillwater is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services. A link to the form breach notification letters that Stillwater filed with the Attorney General Commonwealth of Massachusetts is below.
