PRC-Saltillo Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1966 by Ed Prentke and Barry Romich as the Prentke Romich Company, the company formally merged in 2019 with sister company Saltillo.4 Today, PRC-Saltillo is a worldwide developer of speech-generating devices (SGDs), market-leading apps and several innovative AAC language systems that enable individuals with complex communication disorders the ability to express themselves.4 PRC-Saltillo’s family of communication devices, support and implementation solutions, and iOS apps provides a full range of products and services to clients, caregivers, and support teams.5 Headquartered in Wooster, Ohio, PRC-Saltillo employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, PRC-Saltillo reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on or about August 21, 2024, PRC-Saltillo detected suspicious activity within its computer network. As a result, PRC-Saltillo launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, PRC-Saltillo learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and copied by an unauthorized actor between August 13 and August 21, 2024. As a result, PRC-Saltillo began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number

 

On September 12, 2024, PRC-Saltillo began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, PRC-Saltillo is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
