WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, SAM announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on July 5, 2024, SAM discovered suspicious activity on its computer systems. As a result, SAM launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, SAM learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party during the incident. As a result, SAM began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by SAM. However, on the breach notice posted on its website, SAM states that the data security incident, “may have impacted some of its clients’ protected health information (“PHI”)”.1 Additionally, the same breach notice indicates that Social Security numbers might have also been impacted saying, “If an individual’s Social Security number was affected, credit monitoring and identity restoration services will be provided at no cost.”1

As a result of the data breach, SAM posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, SAM plans to mail data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice on its website, SAM will be providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
