Okanogan Behavioral HealthCare Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Okanogan Behavioral HealthCare (“OBHC”) regarding its recent data breach. The OBHC data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 1,000 individuals.

OBHC is a mental healthcare provider based in Washington. Founded in 2002, OBHC provides a variety of services, including around the clock crisis response, counseling, case management, substance use disorder/opioid use disorder prevention, education, evaluation, treatment, management, and recovery support, shove house supportive housing, and child and adolescent services. From its offices in Omak, Room One in Twisp, at area schools, and via telehealth, OBHC serves residents of all communities in Okanogan County and from some immediately adjacent areas of Chelan County, Douglas County, and Grant County.3 Headquartered in Omak, Washington, OBHC employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, OBHC announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on May 15, 2024, OBHC learned of an incident that disrupted some if its IT systems. As a result, OBHC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, OBHC learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party between May 13 and May 15, 2024. As a result, OBHC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information
  • Driver’s license or other identification numbers
  • Medical information including treatment and diagnosis information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, OBHC posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on August 23, 2024, OBHC mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals and reported the breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Based on the breach notice on its website, OBHC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary identity monitoring services.
