Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Benedictine Schools of Richmond (“BSoR”) regarding its recent data breach. The BSoR data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to over 2,600 individuals.
ABOUT BENEDICTINE SCHOOLS OF RICHMOND:
BSoR is comprised of two Catholic college preparatory high schools, Saint Gertrude High School and Benedictine College Preparatory. Co-located on the Benedictine Abbey campus in Richmond, Virginia, BSoR offers single-sex educational environments for young men and women.2 With a view toward their history and a desire to strengthen Catholic education, Benedictine College Preparatory and Saint Gertrude High School unified under a single new corporation, The Benedictine Schools of Richmond, in January 2020.3 Today, BSoR offers over 30 AP courses, 22 clubs, and 37 teams across 13 sports. Additionally, BSoR employs approximately 60 individuals and has a total enrollment of over 500 students.2
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, BSoR reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on July 18, 2024, BSoR became aware of a cybersecurity incident that limited the operability of its network environment. As a result, BSoR launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, BSoR learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor during the incident. As a result, BSoR began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
On or about August 29, 2024, BSoR began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, BSoR is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
