The Joffrey Ballet Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT THE JOFFREY BALLET:

The Joffrey is a ballet company and dance education organization based in Illinois. WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, the Joffrey reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on September 30, 2023, the Joffrey detected that it had experienced a cybersecurity event in which an unauthorized third party accessed its network and encrypted files. As a result, the Joffrey launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, the Joffrey learned that sensitive personal information in its systems was copied by the unauthorized actor. The Joffrey began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:  

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Date of birth
  • Passport number
  • Financial account number or credit/debit card number
  • Health information

 

On August 23, 2024, the Joffrey began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, the Joffrey is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
