WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Bank of Clarke reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, Bank of Clarke recently became aware of suspicious activity in its email environment. As a result, Bank of Clarke launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Bank of Clarke learned that sensitive personal information in emails and files within emails may have been acquired by an unauthorized actor on June 17, 2024. Bank of Clarke began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Bank of Clarke. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Account number, credit or debit card number
- Account passwords or personal identification numbers
- Driver’s license or state identification number
On August 23, 2024, Bank of Clarke began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Bank of Clarke is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
