PEER Consultants Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating PEER Consultants, P.C. (“PEER”) regarding its recent data breach. The PEER data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

PEER is a full-service environmental engineering consulting firm based in Washington D.C. Founded in 1978, PEER provides the planning, design, and implementation of a wide array of water supply, water resources, sanitary and storm sewer system and water/wastewater treatment projects.3 Additionally, PEER’s team applies environmental engineering and sciences with regulatory and public policy acumen to provide solutions for its clients in reducing/mitigating their harmful environmental impacts and improving operational efficiencies.4 Headquartered in Washington, D.C., PEER has five additional locations across the United States, two international offices, and employs over 100 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, PEER reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on February 7, 2024, PEER discovered suspicious activity within its computer network. As a result, PEER launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, PEER learned that sensitive personal information may have been viewed or taken from its systems between January 18, 2024, and February 7, 2024. As a result, PEER began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state identification number
  • Passport number

 

On August 21, 2024, PEER began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices provided to the Attorney General of Vermont, PEER is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
